Flashback: HAM21 in brief
An overview of the individual projects
HAM 21 – this title represented the largest expansion and modernisation project in the history of Hamburg Airport. In total investments amount to 356 million euros. A new terminal; new wide access roads in front of the terminals and the extension of the passenger pier were just a few of the milestones along the way to creating New Hamburg Airport. The starting signal for HAM 21 was given in 2001 with the ground-breaking ceremony for Terminal 1. The expansion project was completed in March 2010. The following is an overview of the individual projects, given in the chronological order in which construction began:
Terminal 1
Construction begin: 2001, Completion: 2005
HAM 21 commenced when construction began on Terminal 1 in 2001. Structural construction began in Spring 2002; the topping out ceremony was held in 2003. The building was officially opened on 20th May 2005 in the presence of some 1,500 invited guests. Open days held on 21st and 22nd May 2005 gave Hamburg’s residents the opportunity to admire the new terminal and also to take a look behind the scenes. With its light interior; generous design and continuation of the architecture of Terminal 2 (then Terminal 4), opened in 1993, in May 2005 Terminal 1 marked the dawn of a new era at Hamburg Airport. In addition to a new appearance Hamburg Airport was also given a state of the art inner life, with 58 check-in counters in Terminal 1 alone and a baggage handling system able to transport 6,000 suitcases an hour.
South Pier
Construction begin: 2002, Completion: 2004
The Passenger Pier, which was extended to the south in 2004, now has an additional six new passenger boarding bridges and eight new bus gates, making boarding even more convenient for passengers. The new section of the building gives the entire Pier an increased visual weighting vis-à-vis the terminals and completes its symmetry. All passenger facilities – such as waiting areas, passport controls, etc. – are located on the Departures level. An open pillar construction has made it possible to locate bus gates, air cargo handling areas and other operational facilities on the ‘ground floor’.
P2 multi-storey car park
Construction begin: 2003, Completion: 2004, Completion rotunda rings: 2006
Hamburg Airport has set a course with P2 multi-storey car park – Europe’s largest circular multi-storey car park. In Autumn 2004 the parking rotunda increased the number of parking spaces in the vicinity of the terminals by 2,200 at a stroke. The building’s circular shape has several advantages for drivers. Its sophisticated geometry makes so-called ‘pillar-free parking’ possible. This means that instead of being located at the front of the parking lanes the building’s supporting pillars are at the rear of the parking spaces; drivers are thus able to manoeuvre into spaces quickly and easily. Furthermore the parking spaces widen out on one side, making it easier for passengers to load and unload their luggage. The newly built rotunda rings, completed at the end of 2006, extended the number of parking spaces available in P2 to 3,000.
A new parking deck was built to fill the gap between P2 and P4 multi-storey car parks. The additional 1,600 parking spaces were finally completed in Autumn 2009. In all there are some 8,400 parking spaces in the vicinity of the terminals and the total number of parking spaces at the airport increased to 12,000.
The northern access road and the parking guidance system
Construction begin: 2003, Completion: 2005
Work on a new, wider access road to the terminals began in early 2003. The widening of the access road in front of the terminals, completed in May 2005, allows traffic to flow along four lanes and provides a drop-off lane directly in front of the terminal buildings as well as a short-stay parking zone. A parking guidance system with dynamic signs has simplified orientation and the approach to the airport for all car drivers since April 2005. Information sign boards located in a radius of 1.5 kilometres around the airport provide information on the parking situation at the airport and guide drivers to the nearest free parking spaces.
Airport Plaza
Construction begin: 2006, Completion: Late 2008
The opening of the Airport Plaza on 4th December 2008 represented the last milestone in the completion of New Hamburg Airport. The ground-breaking ceremony was held on 11th May 2006; the foundation stone was laid on 16th August 2006 and the topping out ceremony took place on 2nd August 2007 in the presence of some 400 high-ranking guests. At the height of construction work on the shell 130 people were working on the Airport Plaza. They erected the shell from approximately 21,000 cubic metres of concrete and 3,400 tonnes of concrete steel as well as five steel girders made using 62 tonnes of steel. To complete the roof construction 480 panes of glass covering an area 1,100 square metres were installed in the building’s 5 roof lights. The rest of the roof, comprising a total area of 3,900 square metres, was covered with profiled sheeting and aluminium. During the ongoing interior work up to 400 workers have been on site at any one time, laying flooring, pipes and cables or plastering the walls. As the link between Terminals 1 and 2 the Airport Plaza is the site of the central security facilities with an initial 16 aviation security checkpoints, through which all passengers have to pass to reach their departure gates. Having passed through the central security facilities passengers find a diverse catering area covering 2,630 square metres and operated by Marché International, a division of the Swiss Mövenpick Group. Retail outlets covering 4,450 square metres of floor space invite passengers to browse. The Heinemann Duty Free walk-through shop is the Airport Plaza’s largest retail outlet, with an area of 1,400 square metres. Furthermore, there are shops with brands such as Escada, MCM, Porsche Design, Swarovski, Lacoste, Tommy Hilfiger, Marc O´Polo and many more.
S-Bahn rapid transport system and hotel
Facilities at New Hamburg Airport rounded off on 11th December 2008, when the new airport S-Bahn rail link running on the S1 line went into service. Passengers using the service, which starts from Hamburg Central Railway Station and runs at 10 minute intervals, have a journey time of just 25 minutes to the terminals. Finally, in autumn 2009 the Radisson deluxe hotel opened, with 266 comfortable rooms and within walking distance directly in front of the terminals.
